Jalaneti/ Nasal cleansing for Nasal Allergy
Type of technique: Yogic
Process:
Active
Timing:
Early morning
Required external
environment: Early morning sun light
Required internal
environment: Making the mind for cleaning and
avoid thinking about surrounding (comments from others, feelings like shy)
Learning style:
Guidance of Guru or teacher is required initially.
Nasal Allergy:
Nasal means related to Nose, Allergy means the physiological disturbance. The
outside pollution leads to allergy of nose. So, let us learn the structure & function of the
respiratory tract.
Anatomy &
Physiology of Upper Respiratory tract (URT)
Two
nostrils, nasopharynx, pharynx, Nasal bulb, hypothalamus, limbic system, olfactory
cortex and autonomic nervous system.
Chemicals
in the inhaled air dissolved in epithelium that is the Olfactory bulb or nasal
bulb which is a receptor. There the chemical energy convert into electrical
energy (Action potential) and pass through Olfactory nerve to olfactory cortex
of the brain (Fronto-temporal junction). This triggers the release of
neurotransmitters like “Serotonin” and “Dopamin” which regulates the mood. Smell
is the only function which directly goes to limbic system.
As
a habit, if the dust particles are obsorbed but not removed naturally with
common cold, fever and other way of toxic removal happens. Hence cleaning of
the Nasal passage is required to prevent future nasal allergy or bronchitis or
brochiectasis or asthma. There are medical treatments to solve the developed
pathology, but the daily cleaning like shower for skin, urination for renal
system, toilet activities for digestive system etc., is required.
If
there is a technique which is safe, easy to learn, feel the freshness of air
passages, that will be a gift for respiratory system. There is cleaning
technique called Nasal cleaning that is “Neti” in “Sanskrit” language.
Physiological Changes
Slow
and indirect breathing activates either the slow adapting stretch receptors
(SARs) or stretch of fibroblasts surrounding lungs. Slowly both the reactions
leads tone of the three consequences like; (1) reduction of action potentials
in neural tissues (2) increase the resting membrane potentials and (3)
synchronization of hypothalamus and brain stem. These resembles the
Parasympathetic nervous system. This in turn reduce the blood pressure, heart
rate and Oxygen consumption. This is how alteration
of breathing with awareness shifts
in autonomic nervous system towards parasympathetic dominance. Jala neti
can enhance the overcoming ability on odors can be seen in few sessions of Jala
neti. The dependency that is likes and dislikes of food and aromas will not
affect the mind at this level. So, Jala neti is useful to reduce the nasal
allergy, to reduce the stress reaction, to improve patience and balance mood
changes.

Jala Neti Technique
Equipment: Neti
pot
Water:
Luke warm with little salt
Technique:
Fill the pot with luke warm salt water. Bend the body front to 45 degrees or
comfortable enough to keep the hand on knee. Now turn the head to one side and
insert the tube of the Neti pot into the nostril. Keep the mouth open to breath
through and avoid nasal breathing until the end of technique. Allow the water
to flow through the nostril by the help of Gravity (G). This can be achived
only by tilting the head making the nostril parallel to the ground. If the
nostril is not parallel the flow of water will be less or it may enter into
pharynx.
Since
the water flow is un-natural material through the nostril, the chemical
adaptation happens after every cleaning session. Apart from this benefit, the
mind which is really there in the situation, the Hypothalamus and Pituitary are
going to change the reaction ability of mood. Hence over a period of time, the
concentration ability, alertness, much internal awareness and the proper
breathing can be achieved. As the connections can be influencing the neighbor
organs like Eye, Ear and mouth, this technique is best for ENT problems especially
common cold & Sinusitis.
Spiritual Benefits: Stimulates
Ajna Chakra. Enhances Prana Vayu and Udana vayu.
